The date of manufacture and series number on the helmet label are for our internal reference and SEI also requires this information be on the product. The "five-year replacement recommendation" for a Tipperary helmet starts from the time the helmet is first worn, not the date of manufacture and is a guideline for the maximum amount of time a helmet can be worn before a replacement is advisable. Normal wear and tear, hair spray, cosmetics, chemical cleaners and sweat are among the factors that contribute to the degradation of a helmet-all which begin to occur from the time a helmet is first worn. Ultimately, when a helmet is to be replaced is a judgment call on the part of the wearer and has as much to do with the amount of wear and the level of serviceability of the helmet as it does with its age. The date of manufacture and the series numbers are for our internal records and is not a factor in the five-year replacement recommendation period. If the helmet is dropped on a hard surface or has been worn in a crash or fall, that helmet should be replaced.
